Google’s Penguin Algorithm Expected to Run Real Time

As reported by Barry Schwartz from Search Engine Roundtable, Google’s John Mueller has stated that the next Penguin update is projected to run continuously and in real time.  When the update will happen is still unsure but some are speculating that it will be by the end of the month. While there is no confirmation on the date from Google, Gary Illyes has stated it will be in the foreseeable future, which many believe will be at the very latest by the end of the year.

What does this mean for marketers and business owners?  It means that if your site, or a client’s site, suffers from a Penguin based algorithmic penalty, the recovery time should be much quicker as links and removal requests will be processed by Google in a more timely fashion. No more waiting up to and possibly over a year for backlink data to be re-evaluated and penalties to be lifted.

However, a few commenters raised valid points in suggesting that “real time” probably won’t be real time, as that could give search marketers too much insight into what type of links are still effective, and would give far too much insight on how they impact search metrics.  Which of course would inevitably lead to abuse by some, and we all know Google wouldn’t make it that easy.
